The Singing Practice

The importance of vocal health

The voice is a much sturdier instrument than most people think. If used correctly, it can fill a theatre without amplification, can go on for hours without tiring and can produce all sorts of incredible and weird sounds. But, however strong it is, it is a unique instrument that, when broken, is very difficult to fix. This is why having a reliable singing technique is so very important. Whether you are an amateur singer, a choral singer or a young aspiring musician, if you sing on regular occasions, you should think about vocal health.

As singers our instruments live inside our bodies, which means we become dependent on that body for our instrument to work well. The Singing Practice aspires to be a place where -in the long term- we will be working towards offering all services that are needed towards a holistic approach.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE FIRST CONSULTATION

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. During the first lesson we will have a little chat about what your goals are, we will test out some singing waters by doing some exercises and do a little work on the voice. After all that I will give you a plan on how we can move forward. Once that’s done, it's up to you to decide if it's for you!

ABOUT

I started my musical training at the age of six making the most of the Belgian part time music school system and started my first year of classical singing at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp in 2007 and finished my masters degree with distinction in 2012. The following year, I completed the one year specialised teachers degree at the same institution to later go on to do my second masters degree at the Royal Northern College of Music. Where I also finished an Advanced Postgraduate Degree in 2016.

The part-time music education system in Belgium requires teachers to have a degree in music as well as a specific teaching degree. It creates jobs for musicians and maintains a high standard of music education. During the one year of doing a teaching degree students are required to study a plethora of pedagogic theory-based subjects. They also have to complete a set amount of hours of supervised teaching.

Having done all of this, as well as teaching both privately and at several music schools, I have built up a vast amount of teaching experience working with people of all standards and all ages.

Besides teaching, I am committed towards a professional opera career. Please click here if you would like to see what I’m up to or if you would like to read my professional opera biography.

Sarah is a great teacher! She super understanding and patient. Her help is so important for my singing. I feel like I have improved a lot recently because Sarah is so persistent, trying different techniques and ideas to help me get better at singing.
Her help is most valuable!

I went to Sarah for lesson in order to improve my technique and I haven’t been disappointed. She is very good at explaining and demonstrating what to do, and an enormous help with singing in German and Italian. I always feel as though I’ve been worked hard and go away knowing what I have to practice for the next lesson. I also really like the ease of booking lessons through her website.

Sarah is such a dedicated teacher. I arrive to my lessons in a friendly atmosphere with lots of positive feedback given about my progress from each lesson as well as the most constructive feedback that has helped me not just to help my singing voice but my normal talking voice too. Having had so many posture problems causing me back pain, Sarah was excellent at teaching me how to stand properly which transformed my singing as well as advising me to visit as Osteopath that substantially helped me to fulfil my daily activities. I would recommend Sarah to anyone wanting to improve their singing in a supporting and extremely friendly environment.

Where I am & How to contact me

Please feel free to send me an email if you’re intested in taking up singing lessons. Whether singing is something you’ve always wanted to try but you’ve never really taken it up because you think you ‘might not be able to carry a tune’ -everyone can!- or you’re a (semi)-professional that just wants to work on their technique, we can work towards the goals you want to reach together.
